by Donnie Quigley

I hope your summer has been relaxing, fun and filled with new experiences and adventures. The kids are back in school and starting all the fall activities. Don’t forget theatre arts classes all over the county. I will highlight a few in this article. Single tickets are now on sale at all the local theatres. If you cannot commit to a subscription, take a look at the many offerings, and choose plays or musicals to your liking or those of your children or friends. There are so many options this season, and you are bound to find some that you would enjoy.

Maltz Jupiter Theatre

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has been selling single tickets since August 7, and there are still tickets available for most shows. There is not a bad seat in the house, so you can’t go wrong with any seat you choose. I have had seats all over the theater and always been very happy. The following plays and musicals are for the 2023-2024 season and the 20th Anniversary of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

As you can see, there are so many types of classes for those who are interested in theatre classes, and there are some of the classes like Play in a Day, where a student can get a feel for the theatre if they are new to this type of experience. Theatre classes are great for communication skills, socialization skills and using the creative process to produce a scene, skit or show as part of a group.

Dramaworks has a One Humanity Tour for 6th and 7th graders and uses storytelling to develop informed, thoughtful and compassionate citizens, and provides thoughtful discussion following the performance. Swagger by Eric Coble is told in “direct address” by the three characters, Jordan (an 8th grade student), Daniel (a police officer) and Leela (a small business owner). Their lives intersect in a moment captured on video and told through different perspectives. These are real-life issues our students face in our world today.

The performance is brought to the school and has a 55-minute performance and discussion time. To book a free performance for your school, you can contact Gary Cadwallader, Director of Education at gcadwallader@palmbeachdramaworks.org or (561) 514-4042, ext. 123.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer usher, Dramaworks will provide the training. Ushers are invaluable to all theatre venues. For more information, email Company and House Manager Pierre Tannous at ptannous@palmbeachdramaworks.org or (561) 514-4042 ext 2.

Asolo Theatre

Asolo Theatre

In Sarasota, Florida, a quaint, small city an hour from Tampa, there is a jewel of a theatre. The Asolo Theatre’s interior was brought over in 1949 from a small Italian village. It was acquired by Everett Austin, the first Director of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The acting company, part of Florida State University, began performing a summer series of plays and operas, first as the Asolo Theatre Festival and later the Asolo Theatre Company.

The company grew from a seasonal festival to a year-round company. It was recognized as the First State Theatre of Florida. In 1973, the theatre partnered with the FSU School of Theatre to mentor actors in its MFA program. Although it outgrew the original theatre, the new theatre within the FSU Center for the Performing Arts is just lovely. I have been to many productions and have enjoyed them all. Take a weekend and enjoy the Ringling Museum and everything else Sarasota has to offer along with a wonderful production. I have listed their 2023-2024 Season below.
