The Man of LaMancha at the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach.

Theatre season is in full swing and have we seen some impressive productions! The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s joyful Jersey Boys and the hopeful Sweet Charity, musicals to lift your heart. Dramaworks’ stunning Twelve Angry Men and the powerful Leaving Omaha. I also had the pleasure of experiencing The Man of LaMancha at the Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach. I am so excited about the rest of the season and the theatres have announced next season’s productions! I’ll let you know what the rest of the season will bring to us as well as next season’s treasures!

Maltz Jupiter Theatre

Cast of Good People

The next production at the Maltz is the Tony nominated play, Good People by David Lindsay- Abaire. The play examines the American working-class experience and their everyday struggles and hopes. Good People will take you on an emotional journey. It is a hard-hitting play with humor to soften the hard truths that many experience because of life circumstances and choices made. Margie is a single mother, who finds herself without a job and finds out an old flame, now a successful doctor, is throwing a party for his affluent friends. Margie decides to crash it in hopes of finding some work. The emotional rollercoaster that follows will have you empathizing, laughing and squirming. The show includes Award winning director, actor and writer, Jerry Dixon, as well as the talented cast of Anne Bates, Joe Cassidy and Kim Cozart Kay. Every one of these actors has an impressive resume including Broadway! The show runs from February 12- 26.

Oliver

Oliver- March 14 – April 2, 2023
The final show of the season is Oliver, book, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. This Charles Dickens classic about an orphaned boy in the Victorian age has captured hearts for years. The cast of robbers and pickpockets that take in Oliver is delightful and menacing and heartwarming. The songs, which I promise not to sing along, are joyful, energetic and toe tapping fun. I cannot wait to meet the characters on Opening Night as I with the rest of the audience experience the journey Oliver takes from orphanage, to workhouse, to abusive apprenticeship to Artful Dodger’s innocent new pickpocket. Will sweet Oliver ever find that loving family? I saw the movie when I was 13 and learned every song. It captured my heart and has always had a special place in my musical favorites. The sweet voices of the orphans and pickpockets will make you smile and tear up a bit. The show will run from March 14- April 2. This is such a good family production, run and grab your tickets now. If you have a young person who has never seen a live production, Oliver is a wonderful introduction to the world of theatre. It moves quickly and the production numbers are so lively!

Photo by Tim Stepien Nicholas Tyler Corbin and Georgi James, The Science of Leaving Omaha

After the powerful performances in Twelve Angry Men, I was looking forward to The Science of Leaving Omaha by Carter W. Lewis, but I was not prepared for the inspiring story or the amazing performance by Georgi James, who plays Iris. She is on stage for the whole play, which does not have an intermission and her character is so believable. The audience becomes so empathetic from the start because every part of her body is always in motion, and you can feel her pain, even though the origin is unknown. As the story unfolds and another strong character enters her world and her issues become apparent. The audience is holding their breath, just wanting the best for Iris. The characters of Baker and Sally, the night guard are also so well acted. This play leaves you pondering for days about the story and especially Iris. Dramaworks is Theatre to Think About, and it is one of the many reasons I look forward to every production.

August: Osage County by Tracy Letts – Directed by William Hayes

This Pulitzer Prize-winning comic drama is the heartbreaking downfall of a family. It reveals the resentments, recriminations and pain a family can bring to one another even as there may be support and love. Tickets are on sale now and there is not a bad seat in the house!

This Pulitzer-Prize-winning play is a darkly comic fable of brotherly love and rivalry. It tells the story of two brothers Lincoln and Booth, names given to them as a joke by their father.
